New Google updates are changing the way the search engines are operating. Key words are no longer being shown in our Google analytics. So, what should we be using to measure our SEO/SMM efforts instead of keywords?

Hi Brent,

That is a great question.

Have you considered using any of the free/paid Google Keyword Tool alternatives listed below?

It’s safe to say that most marketers are looking for new, sustainable ways to measure our SEO/SEM efforts. I found this article from Kiss Metrics particularly helpful:

http://blog.kissmetrics.com/5-alternatives-keyword-not-provided/

Although Kristi’s suggestions are not perfect (landing pages in Google Analytics, Site Search, Webmaster Tools, Anchor Text, etc.) they are better than nothing. I’ll be sure to keep you posted as we continue our research.

I hope this helps.

Best,

John

Google Webmaster tools still shows inbound keywords. One could use this to set the trend... determine what words are coming in and at what volume. True, you have largely lost the ability to tie conversion to keywords since private search started.

A fun tool... http://www.spyfu.com... will show keywords for a domain. I use this a lot to get a top level view of what my competitors are doing.
