Salesforce.com is the cloud computing darling of customer relationship management (CRM) software. They have significant control of mind share in that space, and their legacy in customer service and sales force automation software is strong. However, CRM is a trifecta. It is made up of sales, service and – wait for it – marketing! So, where does Salesforce.com stand as a marketing automation solution?
Channel integration is essential for a truly effective enterprise marketing plan. Too often, retailers ignore the connectivity between customer channel preferences and buying behavior. Channel preferences no longer pertain to only transaction-based interactions; customers are interacting with brands in entirely new ways. The emergence of new marketing channels, such as social media and mobile, require a retailer to provide consistent branding across all retail channels, and to engage the customer with marketing messages through their channel of choice.

Recently I presented at an American Marketing Association conference. At the end of my session, one of the attendees came up to me and began chatting about his situation. He has a CEO who micromanages his marketing department. It’s so bad, that when his CEO is on vacation, he can’t get anything done because the CEO has to see everything. I’ve been where this guy is, and it is not a happy place.
